Prescription Weight Loss

Medical Weigh Loss

Clinical guidelines developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommend weight-loss medicines for appropriate patients as part of a comprehensive weight-loss program including proper nutrition and physicial activity. Appropriate patients include people who are obese (have a body mass index [BMI] of 30 or greater) or people who are overweight (have a BMI of 27 or greater) and also have risk factors such as type 2 diabetes.

In 1 clinical study:

  • Overweight (BMI of 27 or greater) and obese patients received either
    Qsymia® 7.5 mg/46 mg, Qsymia 15 mg/92 mg, or placebo
  • Depending on the dose, patients who stayed on Qsymia for 1 year lost: 22 to 28 pounds

Qsymia should be used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adults with an initial body mass index (BMI) of:

  • 30 kg/m2 or greater (obese) or
  • 27 kg/m2 or greater (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related medical condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol

Limitations of Use:

  • It is not known if Qsymia changes your risk of heart problems or stroke or of death due to heart problems or stroke
  • It is not known if Qsymia is safe and effective when taken with other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal weight loss products
  • It is not known if Qsymia is safe and effective in children under 18 years old
